The Eailway Board inquiry to-day resumed the hearing of evidence as to I eonditione in the local shunting yard, j L. A. Voltz, traffic inspector at TVel- j lington, said that until the death of Carznicliaei he had received no complaints of local conditions. The present trouble Iβ deemed to be an organised j agitation. For, instance, he had in- j quired *s to tjie conditions of porters j at Otaki. and had found them satis- i factory* the men there stating that a j movement on their behalf, taken up ■ br the A-SJLS. at Palmerston North] w'ae against the wishes of the men at j Otaki- Both recent shunting fatalities ; at Palmerston North were deemed to be j due, not to the existing conditions, but j to lack of thought on the part of the J deceased. Cross-examined by Mr. ilack, witness j admitted that the yard here coald be j made safer with improved appointments, j more roads, better drainage and othor j improvements, but he considered the ! lighting very good. He admitted that ; it was not sow hi? opinion this was j an organised agitation.
