Before it was subdued the fire on this Kent had reached to within a few feet of the 600 tons of oil fuel in the vessel's bunker.s. Tentative agreement reached in the dispute between the Auckland Gas Co. and the clerical and show room workers in its employ. ■ For the theft of two motor cars and one'motor cycle a young married man, Richard Dyer Downey was to-day committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The Kent brought about 11,000. tons of general cargo from England, ■of which' over 5000 tons had been . discharged at Auckland, the remainder being for southern ports. , . • Fire was discovered at 4-15 this morning in No. 2 hold of the Federal steamer Kent,. which has been lying in the stream since she discharged her Auckland cargo. The outbreak was still fierce but considered to be under control by One o'clock this afternoon. The flames on the burning steamer Kent were' fought w.hile the vessel lay in the stream tili she developed a heavy list to starboard through the hundreds of tons of water poured into her by the firefloat and the Te Awhina. She -was then berthed at, the Queen's wharf. Motoring- tragedy, on the NapierWaikare Road ou Tuesday night, a service car leaving the road and plunging into the Waikare Gorge. Two persons were. killed and two others badly injured, no hope being entertained for one of them, a woman. .
