Statements recently made in a letter to the editor of the "Lyttelton Titnee" by Miss B. E. Baughan", a well-known worker for prison reform, that the concrete of which the cells at Paparua prieon is made is faulty, and that in many cells the walls ooze with water in wet weather, were investigated by a '"Lyttelton Times*' reporter, who visited the prieon on Saturday afternoon. The reporter found, after a thorough inspection of the ceils, that the statements could not be substantiated, and that reasonable provision is made for the comfort of prisoners. "Thank God we were not at sea when this happened," said an officer to a "Star" reporter on board the steamship: Kent, which caught fire* this morning. "If it had been otherwise," he added, "there would . have been no hope for anyone.". The extension of the tramways line right on to-the ground at Edeit Park is now-completed, and it is expected that on _Saturday next the tramcars will line up at tlie back of the grandstand. Petrous of the Rugby game in future ■will be able to catch their cars on. the ground.
