With the season that closed last evening the Auckland Little- Theatre Society has made a very promising start in its mission.to present good playe thatk the commercial theatre paesei by. ltd founders are actuated by their know*! ledge that many of the beet English plays of the last decade or co have no* been seen in New Zealand. The plaW chosen by the Society for its introduce! tion to the public has. been played in New Zealand by a professional but it shares that distinction with onlY one other of all the plays by the same I writer—"Man and Superman." When , , for example, are we likely to sea '"Saint Joan" on the professional stage? : The little theatre movement is a worldwide one. It recognises the place of the drama in culture, and tries to do some- j thing to put it there. Auckland may j take some pride in the fact that it has j given New Zealand the first repertory theatre, though enthusiasts should bear in mind that a good beginning alone '• does not make a career. We hope not i only that the Auckland Society will have j a prosperous career, but that the ! Southern cities will quickly follow suit, J and that a chain of repertory theatres ' will be established throughout New , Zealand, which will work individually and co-operatively in the cauee of the j best drain; , .. j
