NEWMARKET SCHOOL SITE.

QUESTION OF ITS DISPOSAL. COUNCIL WILL DO NOTHING. At a meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening, a letter was read from the Education Board stating that it proposed, at an early date, to consider the question of the 'disposal of the old school site at Newmarket. It desired to know -whether the council was prepared to make a definite offer for that -cite. ■ The - recent received from the council that might fix the price as between the board and council at £4000, was not in the nature ef an offer. The board wished to intimate that .the sum mentioned was not adequate. The Legal and Financial Committee of the council had considered the letter and reported that it was of the opinion that no.good purpose would be served by giving the matter further : consideration. It was apparent that the education authorities expected to receive, for the site in question, a sum approximating present day commercial Value, which was beyond the resources of the council for the purpose of the provision of recreation grounds. In view of those circumstances, combined with the 'fact that the site could not be described as the most suita.ble for the purpose for which it was intended, the committee recommended that no further, action be taken in the matter. The recommendation of the committee was adopted.
