BALL IN TOWN HALL

BT NAVY AND VICTORIA LEAGUE. __N ENJOYABLE EVENING. It was a good idea to hold the Victoria League and Navy League's ball to the officers of the Fleet the night after the City Council's "At Home," as the elaborate decorations of the latter were still fresh and effective, being composed entirely of hardy evergreens or growing plants. There were plenty of partners for the naval men, and everybody seemed to spend an enjoyable time. In addition to the bright uniforms of the visitors, a cheerful note was added by the coloured coat lapels which the .civilians wore, to go with the powder and patches which was de rigueur for the ladies. ■ There were about 1500 people present, so the throng was a gay one during the progress of the dances: Mr. A. G. Lunn, president of the Navy League, Mrs. Lunn, Mr. W. J. Napier, president of the Victoria League, and Mrs. Napier, received the guests upon arrival, and were assisted by the members of the committees. During the evening six sets in special costumes danced a minuet, and this item was particularly effective. Very often at these large public balls the supper is more or less of a scramble, but last night the committee made excellent arrangements, for which they must be congratulated. The room was charmingly decorated, and the refreshments were most appetising.
