AUSTRALIAN WOMEN.
WHAT THEY ARE LIKE. MRS. COONTZ GIVES HER IMPRESSIONS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, August 7. Mrs. Coontz, wife of Admiral Coontz, returned to Sydney yesterday from Melbourne, en route for New Zealand and will leave to-day by the Moeraki. Mrs. Coontz said that in the two States through which she had travelled she had been .much interested in the various types of Australians. Their one characteristic was that they were big and broad-minded, like the great Australian spaces. The visit to Australia had been a revelation to her and her American friends. They had no idea that the cities were so large and beautiful, and were amazed at the signs of commercial activity on all sides. The visit of the fleet had done a great towards enabling Australians and Americans to understand each other. From all quarters the visitors had received wonderful hospitality, and would lose no opportunity of returning it. The Australian point of view resembled the American in most things. . "I should like to say how much I have admired your girls," remarked Mrs. Coontz. "They are very like American girls in all their ways. They dress much in the same style, act much in the same manner, and possess even some points of charm which the American girls do not. It costs mc a great deal to say that, as I think the American girls equal to any in the world. "One thing most charming I did notice about the girls I saw at the various parties in both Sydney and Melbourne— their exquisite taste in evening dress. I have seen some lovely frocks worn most gracefully. "In speaking of Australian girls, I should like to say a word about your Australian' women. I have found them most good and genuine in all their ways. The wife of your Premier touched a very tender chord in my heart, and I shall carry away with mc a pleasant recollection of the afternoon I was fortunate enough to spend in her company."
