Heavy rain set in yesterday afternoon, combined with strong winds, increasing at midnight to almost hurricane force. Fences and trees were blown down. In the early hours of this niorning a house occvipied by Mr. Devey, in Rewi Street, lost a portion of its roof. The occupants were not hurt. On the outskirts of Te Aroha haystacks were blown over and a portion of the electric light system of Te Aroha borough was interrupted. Timber ■which was stacked for the erection of a newbuilding was strewn a distance of 50 yards. Verandahs were blown down, and milk cans on Te Aroha railway station I platform were lifted bodily and de- ! posited on the railway line. There was a torrential downpour of rain all night.
