Ethel M. Dell's vivid melodramstie romance involves a girl and two men' in darkest Africa. Briefly, it concerns Sylvia Ingleton, the proud and spirited daughter of wealthy English parents". Unable to get along with her domineering stepmother and fearful of heing forced into a loveless marriage, sh» runs away to South Africa, determined to marry her childhood sweetheart, Guy Rauger. Unfortunately for Sylvia's plans, Guy has become a worthless man, and she is forced to turn for protection to Guy's cousin. Burke Ranger. Serous complications ensue when Sylvia marries Burke and Guy tries to claim her. Matters reach a crushing climax during a blinding rain-storm. While Burke is away trying to stem the flood that comes sweeping down from the mountain, Guy secretly returns and tries to induce Sylvia to go away with him. From that point the story takes a remarkable turn. Out of the fury of the night comes an unusual sequence of events that lead to a startling solution of the love tangle. Anna Q.
