FALL OF EARTH
IN ANZAC AVENUE. PORTION OF BA> T K SLITS. ' Employees of H. T. Merritt, Ltd., merchants, in Anza£ Avenue, were suddenly startled during the lunchpon hour to-day, when, without warning, some hundreds of tons of the bank of the avenue overlooking the harbour gave way and crashed down behind the building. The. spot is one upon which Aucklanders were densely packed on Tueadav to watch the arrival of the fleet, and had the slip occurred two days earlier many people must have been killed. At the back of Merritt's.building is a six-foot fence, and so great was the slip to-day that the fence is eomplelely covered up, while the force of the impact, broke several windows and shook .the, whole building, Probably 500 tons oc tTie bank came down, and there is every indication of further sfips, because the papa formation of the bank . shows numerous flaws, and great flakes are merely hanging on until further rain falls, when they will give way.
