Excursion steamers offered a* a means of viewing the fleet's arrival were well patronised. The Northern Company's coaster Manaia conveyed a ptirty numbering between four and five hundred well down the Gulf and was the first of the excursion vessels to welcome tlie Fleet After ..the meeting she put about and came back to port with the squadron, rounding North Head in company wi£h the- relief ship Medusa. A number of smaller coastal steamers and numerous hire launches did excellent business.
