A BRIGHT WELCOME.
It was a bright mid-winter welcome j that Auckland gave the American chips to-day. Possibly before they leave our visitors will find that the Auckland climate can be harsh and rigorous, but the blue sky, the warm sun, and the almost windless air of to-day, which, is less than a week past the middle of our winter period, were ideal conditions for their arrival, and must have given them a most pleasant impression of the city, its surroundings, and the New Zealand climate. Lately the phrase "Winterless North" has seemed grimly ironical, but the beet kind of winter day in Auckland is a joy, and one of the finest advertisements for New Zealand. The people of Auckland have a proper pride ill the beauties of their harbour and city, and they will hope that in the estimation of their guests Auckland will be ■ put high in the list of the world's beautiful harbours. An American admiraj in the Fleet has named Rio, Hobart, and Sydney in this order as the three finest harbours in the world, but has he seen Auckland? A splendid sight the ships made as they steamed up the harbour in the auspicious sunlight, a pageant of majestic power and beauty in a beautiful setting. Nature's kindness is a good omen for the success of the visit. There is a warm welcome for these guests who, clad in such might, come not as strangers, but as kinsmen. Their introduction to Auckland has been happy, and their stay here should be memorable.
