FRENCH NOT BEATEN.
\ PARIS, August 10. The French Premier (M. Painleve) has received a telegram from Syria to the effect that Jebel Druse is now quiet. Olßcial quarters declare that the trouble is purely local. The Beirut correspondent of '"Lc Temps" telegraphs that there is no question of the dispatch of a regular expedition against the Druses. He says the French already possess adequate forces in the Levant to put down the revolt. The French casualties to date are much below the figures given, the correspondent asserts. The members of the French staff in Beirut are confident' of their ability to deal with the situation. General Sarrail has telegraphed to M. Painleve stating that the fighting in Syria has been practically confined to attacks on two French punitive columns. The first column was overwhelmed by the Jebel Druses, and lost 100 out of its strength of 160 men. The second column withdrew after losing its ammunition convoy.
The French capital, Seida, haa not fallen. It is still ocupied by the French. (Reuter.)
