THE MINING., DISPUTE,

NO SIGN OF SETTLEMENT. NEW YORK, August 10. It was hoped that the owners of the anthracite coalmines at Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the miners might reconcile their differences in time to avert a suspension of work on September 1. This hope has now failed, however. Mr. John Lewis (president of the United Mine Workers, has informed Mr. Samuel Warriner (chairman of the owners' conference) that further negotiations will be useless until the owners abandon their opposition to increase in wages and to the adoption of the checkoff system.— (Reuter.)
