GISBORNE LEMONS.
WANTED IN THE SOUTH. The Tact that Poverty Bay has r.nw reached a stajre in citrus Truit production When it is needed to exploit outside marlcets and especially the South Island, was disclosed at a mertin ror the Poverty Bay Fruits-rowers' Association. As a result it is probable that growers win take a yrreater interest in the export or at least a ■portion of the citrus fruit crop to the South. Mr. Mclndoe, the iornl orchard inspector said that the matter or rreig-bts had a bieliearinß- on the citrus rruit production of the district. The lemon crops wre increasing- each year, and the time was ripe for the exploitation or the Southern market.?. The recent afritat'on of the South Tor the removal nr the duty on Imported lemons should be rec-arded as the ■wriiinp- on the wall. The consumers in the Pr-iith Island required lemons, and if a district that could rxow them would not fill their requirements it was hardly reason - ahle to expect the purchaser to be loaded with extra landing- rhare-es on imported lemons. It was beyond Question that Poverty fay could compete -with any part or Now Zealand in citrus fruit production. and if the fruit that was annually allowed to ripen and rot were put on the Southern raarVPi it would lieln considerably in supplying- their demands.
