DUNEDIN'S HEARTY WELCOME.
ACKNOWLEDGED BY ADMIRAL,
"A GLORIOUS PLACE."
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN", Monday. Though Dunedin's welcome to the srction of the American Fleet visiting here was prepared for to-morrow morning, it was none the less sincere and hearty when it had'to be given this morning at short notice. The whole' fleet was berthed at 9 a.m. Shortly after 10 o'clock large parties of school children arrived, most of them either carrying the Stars and Striped or the New Zealand Ensign, and their cheers of welcome made some noise. ' The Tramways Band struck up a welcome and cheering and waving of Ameri* can flags was much in evidence as the flagship was berthed. The graceful lines of the destroyere were much admired as they came up the harbour. As the official party boarded the flagship the girls from the Home Science School, under Professor Strong, sang the "Star. Spangled Banner." Cigars and cigarettes were handed round, but liquor of any description was absent. - After the formalities had been duly discharged parties of echool children visited the ships. Later a formal reception was held on board the flagship.' "Rear-Admiral Marvell. in replying 1 , said that on behalf of himself and his officers and men, he wished to thank them for the welcome that had been extended. They had looked forward to the visit with great anticipation, and when they saw the beautiful hills that morning they realised what a glorious place New Zealand must be. They were very glad to be in Dunedin, but'regretted that there had been an unfortunate misunderstanding as far as the day of arrival was concerned. It had been "carried out according to the schedule drawn up, a copy of which he had .in his hand. The visit to Dunedin will last ten days, during which a round oL entertainment will be held, including a special trotting meeting. Many hundreds of men were allowed ashore from the warships to-day and the general. subject of remark was the cosmopolitan nature of the personnel.
