A SHOCKING DISASTER.
18 CHILDREN DROWNED.
FRENCH BATHING TRAGEDY.
SOME HEROIC PRIESTS
(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.)
(Received 10.30 a.m.) PARIS, August 9. A bathing disaster of the most shocking description has occurred. Thirty-five small children, whose parents worked in the Roubaix factories, were enjoying a treat in charge of Father de la Porte. The Father warned the children the tide was rising. Some tried to take a short cut to the sand dunes and were caught in the incoming tide and fell into a deep hollow of shifting sands. Father de la Porte and two abbes plunged into the sea and saved several unconscious children. Other onlookers made fruitless attempts at rescue. Later eight children recovered consciousness, but at least 18 were drowned. The sand near Roubaix is most deceptive and often appears flat when the total rise and fall measures several feet. It alters with every tide when the sea is rough—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
