Quite a remarkable instance of the swimming ability of the red deer has been noticed recently at Stewart Island (states the "Southland News" correspondent), .as fresh and- undoubted marks ot deer have been observed at the western end of Ulva Island, in Paterson's inlet. Either curiosity or search for fresh pasture has tempted the long swim of considerably of a mile in length to reach this island. The animal evidently did not make a long stay, as the marks do not , extend over a few chains.
