When the American;! Battle; .Fleet reached Auckland on neit Tuesday. Auckland's population will, for increased by nearly 12,000.officers and men from the squadron. Arrartgeniehts have been made by the Potipe Jtepaftment to adequately cope with crowds that will invade Aucklanif*. during[the fleet's visit, and about forty constables from country stations inTvthe Aucklapdprovince will shortly arrive in the city to reinforce the present police stafL During the visit of the. American-War-ships Senior -Sergeant Edwards will ! be the officer in charge of• .the constables who will deal with the crowds, etc., with headquarters at the Queen's Wharf Police Station. ''--\.
With over 10,000 "Jackies" visiting Auckland, some are bound to overstep the mark in some small, way ..ajSl get themselves into trouble-.' 'To;,'cope with the from the" fleet;, the police gymnasium, adjoining Jhe Central Police Station in Princes Street, has been placed at' the disposal of the American naval police, who will use this as' their police headquarters while the fleet is anchored in the Waitemata. When an American sailor is arrested, either by the Auckland" police; .or by the naval police, he wjll.be immediately taken to the gymnasium to be dealt with, instead of being confined in the police Station. The effect of,_this is that offending American "Jackies" will not appea/ at the Police Court. They will : be dealt with by their own police staff.
