POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. and Mr. F, G. H. Ellisdon, J.P>) "DON'T MOLEST ME." Alfred James Massey (40) pleaded guilty to being drunk in Karangahape Koad yesterday, but not guilty to a charge of evading payment of a legal ear fare. A tramway conductor stated in evidence, that accused was smoking in a non-smoking compartment. He refused to move and also to pay his twopenny tram fare. Accused said: "Don't molest mtJ ,, when witness requested him to pay his fare. Massey: I don't recollect anything about it at all, sir. Mr. Poynton: No, probably you don't, but the conductor does." On the first charge Massey was convicted and discharged, but on the other he was fined £1 and costs 10/, and ordered to pay the sum of twopence to the Tramway Department. "Here, what about my beer. I had two bottles when I was arrested?" asked Massey. Mr. Poynton: Oh, that's confiscated.' , Massey (as he left the dock) : Oh, well, somebody seems to have got some pood out of it. (Laughter.) REMANDED. On a charge of obtaining the sum of £1 15/ from Meltzer Bros, pawnbrokers, ■by false pretences, Frank Rodden (25) , was remanded to appear on August 13. (Before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M.) BY-LAW CASES. An unusually large, number of by-law cases were listed for hearing to-day, so many, in fact, that the services of three magistrates had to be requisitioned. A large number of cases are being defended in the court this afternoon. As usual, a fairly large number of motorists were each fined 10/ »nd costs for leaving cars unattended, ot without lights. Charged with speeding in Remuera Road, Donald Gray Commons, who was timed to do 32 miles per hour, was fined £2 and costs 11/ Another motorist, Francis Gore. Foote, who did 30 miles an hour, was also fined £2 and costs. William G. Young, a motor cyclist who travelled past the Institute" for the Blind ai 32 miles an hour, was mulcted a fine of £2 and costs also. A bus driver, Percy Upton Barrett, who passed a stationary tram car in Broadway, Newmarket, and_ nearly knocked" the of that borough down, was fined £2 and 33/ costs. Roy White was fined 20/ and costs for stopping within a safety zone. Negligent driving in the vicinity of Grafton Bridge, cost Harry Crump a fine of £2 and costs. Henry T. Dickinson, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving, was fined £3 and costs. Before Mr. W. R. McKean, the following fines were inflicted. Leaving cars unattended, Francis Gamier, £1; Albert E. Hitchings, 10/; Cecil T. Jorey, £1: Thornae Arthur, 10/; Charles McCulloch, 10/, TLomas Potter, 10/, Robert L. Renwiek, 10/, Murrie Spiers, £1, Gustav Steinert, 10/. Carrying petrol in driver's seat: Frank Elliott, £1. Murray Morris, £1. No rear light: Arthur L. Ellisdon. 10/, Charles Flanagan, 10/, E. C. Whitehouse, 10/. Dangerous driving: Martin Dunn, £2, Edric A. Sly, £4, Arthur S. Winger, £2, Percy *Hardinge, £2, George H. Hunt, £2. Stopping in a zone: Joseph" McDonald, £1, . Ttyoinas A. Newton, £1. Ambrose Lewis (Mr. West), pleaded net guilty to a charge of negligent driving in Karangahape Hoad. Mr. Hogan called evidence to show that a car driven by defendant knocked a child down while the car was being driven along the tram line alongside a safety zone, and though the witnesses could not definitely fix the speed, they estimated it at from 15 to 25 miles an hour. The defendant, also a passenger in the car at the time, gave evidence that the speed when passing the 'safety zone was slow and could not be considered dangerous. His Worship held that there was no evidence of negligence and dismissed the information. ROAD CLOSED. j Several motorists were prosecuted j by the Avoiulale Borough Council for driving over a portion of the main road while it was closed during the course of construction, and the following penalties were imposed: J. Barnes, £1, J. Crum, £1, W. Tt. JLeighton. 10/, H. C. Marcon, T. Moor, and E. Thomas ordered to pay costs. On each of two charges of allowing .cattle on a footpath, Mrs. Collins was fined 10/, and V. Main on one similar charge was fined 10/. Insufficient lights on motor cars cost F Bmgley 10/ and A. Doherty was ordered to pay costs.
