THE VELVET TONGUE.
TRIAL BY REVOLVER.
A REPUBLICAN WAY.
LONDON, July 28
Legora Ward, the former secretary of the now defunct Irish Freedom League, reveals a startling story of a Republican court-martial, held behind locked doors at his house at Hampstead. The outcome was the conviction of William Jenkins, alias Con. O'Brien, formerly president of the league, who was sentenced at the Old Bailey yesterday to two months' imprisonment for stealing a cheque for £25.
Ward says: " Jenkins was the most velvet-tongued man I ever knew. Afte* lie had borrowed money from fellow Republicans it was discovered that he had been responsible for a recent hoax against the league, and it was decided to court-martial him.
" Jenkins, who was in tears, had the 'wind up' properly, because throughout the trial a Webley revolver was pressed against his face. He was ordered to repay the money or 'go on the run.' He promised to repay, but disappeared. So when I saw him !n the street later I gave him in charge."
