HOME INFLUENCES.

EFFECT OF SUB-LETTING. • PRESBYTERY DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph.—Social to "Star.") DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The. sub-letting of tenanted houses, a somewhat common tendency now in New Zealand centres, was mentioned by , the Rev. Jupp at to-day's meeting of the [ Presbytery, as a tendency, that might I have evil influence on home life. His . statement arose from the.brief discussion . of a letter, suggesting that the number ■ of children in denominational homes was '. a matter that required the attention of , the Public Questions' Committee of the . presbytery. In his letter, Mr. Jupp mentioned that figures had already been , quoted, showing that altogether there . were 3560 children in various religious . homes. "Hβ had discussed the matter , with, a State officail, who said that the ' figures were probably ' quite correct. ! Taking that as half of the total number [ of the children. in the homes, it con- . stituted a serious situation; it meant that there were 7000 children- without homes. ! The Rev. Kilpatrick pointed out that a I great many of the children were . orphans. Mr. Jupp. said the growth of the subletting practice was another influence \ that-was affecting home life. They did not want to see in New Zealand evils that had resulted from overcrowded houses in England, and the tendency was in that direction. The matter was one which should be discussed at the assembly. The letter was referred to the Public Questions Committee and Social Service Association.
