(Re<:elred 11 a.ni.l It is authoritatively stated in Labour circles that the Federated Seamen's Union had received £500 Ss compensation for losses sustained by the original crew of the Commonwealth Line's chartered steamer Vohiihnia.. The source of payment is unknown. It was only after the compensation claim was met that the union allowed .its members to man the Commonwealth Line's vessels.—(A. and X.Z: Cable.) '../..
VESSELS LAID UP.
THE XABAMtPS FIREMEN. (Received 11 a.m.) BRISBANE, this day. Owing to the action of certain members of the crews of the Mackarf* and Wyandra, in leaving the ehipe at Brisbane, it was decided by, the owners to lay both vessels up. A Hobatt message says that the Union Company's steamer. Karamu was held up in Hobart owing to the refusal, of the firemen, who were required to fill two vacancies in the vest's complement, to accept berths without a lrtotith's wages in advance and' tho' guarantee of A passage home.—(A. and N.?J, Cable.)
