TURF TALE FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph.—-Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The South Island representation at the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting is weak, but it has managed to pay four dividends in nine starts. Both Zava and The Cheat were racing on th© lirst day, under adverse conditions, but with the prospect or better going to-morrow both may improve on their previous form. Royal Exchange is again in work at Rlccarton, and though he has not yet been sprinted His behaviour has been good, and hopes are entertained that he will make good in moderate company before the winter round is completed. Chignon was given strong work on Tuesday, and the Absurd Ally may be required to fulfil her early spring engagements. She has a lot of speed, but whether she will do better than the average of her sire's get as a three-year-old remains to be seen. The half-sister, by Gay Lad, to Count Cavour, which will race as a three-year-old next season under the name or Gay and Good, shows a lot or speed ln her track work; and from her sire line on both sides should be well ln the limelight when the long distance classics are decided next season. Lytup, in W. Holme's stables, was a good track worker early this season, and rrom indications gathered from her track work since being taken up recently she will run herself out of hack class berore the new season is far advanced. Tc Kawa was again sent out on a schooling task during the week, and rrom his showing will pay his way in the South. Castiilan appears to be an acquisition to the jumping ranks at Rlccarton, and arter jumping the pony hurdles on Wednesday, went over the bigger rences as though he had had years of experience. Winkle's Best, iii R. Emerson's stable, is pleasing track watchers, but his tasks lately have been of- a light order. The Winkle gelding is none too sound, but will go any distance ir he stands up to a solid preparation. Lisogne, recently bought in Taranaki by J. B. Pearson, has made his appearance on the tracks. The Bisogne gelding has pace, and may pay his way at country fixtures. About the best grown yearling at Rlccarton is the Paper Money gelding Credit and ir .1. McCombe carries out his projected campaign in Australia this spring the youngster mentioned may be the best proposition or the quintet to be taken over.
