AN ARMED REVOLT
GREEK ISLAND SEIZED. THE LEADERS CAPTURED. BLOCKADE BY THE NAVY. (Bj" Ca'nle.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 2 p.m.) ATHEXS, June S Declaration of martial law has followed the outbreak of an insurrection on the Island of Samos, 45 miles west of Smyrna. The landing of naval forces and troops was well received by the inhabitants. Apparently only a small proportion had joined the insurgents. Samos is blockaded with a view to preventing the escape of the insurgent leaders. The situation does not seem disquieting. The Greek Legation ny>orts that the leaders of the revolt at Samos havu been captured. The insurgents seized the Government buildings, arrested some of the official.-, released prisoners from the gaols, and looted the contents of the State coffers, amounting to nearly £40,000. The insurgents numher 450, and are armed with captured rifles. A message from Rome states that it is semi-officially reported that armed bands from the interior took possession of Samos. Their object was to eject the Greek officials and secure a reduction of taxation.—(Reutcr.)
