A talk on modern British composers was given at the open evening of tho musical circle at the Lyceum Club by Miss Alice Law, L.R.A.M. Miss Law opened by referring to the accomplished musicians that England claimed in the time of Elizabeth, and the widespread knowledge of the musical art when all were expected to take part in madrigals in the evenings, and spoke of the new schools of music that at present were doing wonderful work. We had formerly been content to get all our music from the Continent, but now this is changed, and there is a renaissance in British music, which dates from 1900, but it is only recently that composers have gained recognition. Many British composers take great interest in folk music, and have done great work in collecting old tunes from country villages, especially Cecil Sharpe, Roger Quilter, Percy Grainger and others. Miss Law gave a short sketch, of each composer whose works -were given. During the evening the following programme was given:-—Violin and piano duet, sonata (two movements), by Elgar; songs, "Silent Moon," "Feast of Lanterns," Granville Bantock; sonata, Arnold Bax; "Moto Perpetuo," by Frank Bridge; "Chinese Folk Song," by Eugene Gossens; "Midnight Tide," Frank Bridge;
