ENFORCING THE RULES.

BANKRUPTCY ADJOURNMENTS. Some surprise was occasioned among members of the legal fraternity at the .Supreme Court this morning, when Mr. Justice Herdman made it known that the rules of the Bankruptcy Act with regard to adjournment-." would be strictly enforced. For a considerable time past it has been the practice for solicitors to make repeated applications for adjournments, some cases being adjourned as many as three and lour times, with the result that there was a great accumulation of business for each bankruptcy sitting. His Honor made it clear this morning that the rules were to be enforced, and that, apart from the adjournment of fourteen days on the first application which could be had a? of right, before other adjournments were allowed it would have to be proved to the satisfaction of the Court that the interests of creditors would not be prejudiced. A number of petitions were adjourned till Thursday, June 4, though in some cases counsel desired a longer adjournment.
