THE MENTAL HOSPITAL.

MUCH IMPROVED CONDITIONS. TRIBUTE TO HEALTH MIXISTER. A deputation from the Southern Cros3 League, headed by Mrs. Emily Nicol, waited upon Sir Maui Pomare, Minister of Public Health, when he arrived in Auckland to-day. Mrs. Xieol conveyed to the Minister tlio .'onpratulations of the League upon his efforts to bring about refortn3 iv the mental hospitals of New Zealand, and in particular she referred to the splendid achievements of Dr. T. G. Gray, who waa now in charge of the Auckland Mental Hospital. The patients themselves were. delighted with what had been done in the way of improvements, and friends could rely absolutely upon the inmates receiving all the care and attention possible. Dr. Gray was devoting all his energies to the work, and had already done wonders. Mrs. Nicol concluded by declaring that New Zealand had had no more capable Minister in charge of mental hospitals than Sir Maui Pomare. In thanking the deputation for their expressions of jroodwill and appreciation Sir Maui reminded the ladies that he. I alnn? with other Ministers, had resigned their portfolios, and it remained with the new leader to pick his Cabinet. Whatever chancres were made Mr. Coates would have the unanimous support of all. Sir Maui added that he did not deserve all the praise, as others had eriven him great assistance, particularly Sir Truby King, who had taken an interest in the mental hospitals as well as in other phases of the work. There had undoubtedly been ereat changee lately, and he thought there would be others in the near future.
