FREEDOM OF LONDON. THE SAVIOUR OF EMPIRE. LONDON, May 14. Therp was a great gathpring at thp Guildhall whpn thp freedom of the Cjtv of London was bestowed on thp Earl of Oxford and Asquith. In a rpmarkablr spppch. the Earl paid tributes to some of the outstanding per sonalities in Rritish history after it became his duty as Prime Minister to unsheath thp sword of Britain in thp world war. Many of these were present. There was an cagpr stir among the assembly when the Earl of Oxford proceeded to singlp out their namp?. Hp first mpntionpd Earl Jellicne. of whom he said that no man had more truly maintained untarnishpd the glorip? of the Na-vy. Thp sppakpr then paid a. tribute to Earl Haig. In conclusion the Earl of Oxford said: "I am going to add the name of a grPat civilian to those of the distinguished sa.ilor and soldipr." This evoked further excitement. The Earl continued: "The provision of munitions and armoury to mppf wholly new pxigpneics. almost miraculous in it? rangp. will live in history as the unique arhipvempnt of Mr. Lloyd Ceorgp."
