SUBURBAN SETTLEMENTS.
*- •»; ROAD WORK TO START. IN CARROLL AND CADMAN \] ESTATES. m
The member for Manukau has been ur"ing strongly that the Government estates in the One Tree Hill and Ellcrslie districts be roaded, drained and thrown open for settlement.
Various reasons have been given to the member for the Government's inactivity, including the desire to wait until the" tramway extension was made to the Harp of Erin. During the last session, a promise was made to Mr. Jordan that tenders would be called early iv September, but no action wa* taken.
A letter has been sent by tho Minister of Lands to Mr. Jordan this week in the following terms: "Regarding the question of road formation in the Carroll and Cadman Settlements, I have to advise you that when I previously communicated with you, arrangements were then being made for letting contracts for the work, but it was found necessary to revise the scheme and prepare new plans. Pressure of more important work prevented this being done as early as it was anticipated, but the plans have now been completed and tenders have been invited for the formation of the principal road. A further contract, covering most of the remaining work, will be advertised next month."
This will serve the dual useful purposes of making sections available adjacent to the city, and providing work for a number of unemployed.
