A NEGLECTED INDUSTRY.
BEEKEEPERS' GRIEVANCE. INCREASED SUBSIDY WANTED. OBv Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. When notification was received from the National Beekeepers' Association at the annual meeting of the Auckland provincial branch at Hamilton yesterday that increased payments would have to be made to successfully administer the Association, Mr. E. W. Sago contended that the best way in which the National Association could improve its finances was to approach the Government with a view to securing a bigger subsidy.. The speaker said that the beekeeping industry was being most unfairly treated in receiving only a subsidy of £100, an amount aosolutely out ot proportion to the value of New Zealand s honey export. The fruitgrowing and poultry-keeping industries Were receiving subsidies running well into four figures, and it was high time that more assistance was given to beekeepers. The Government recognised that apiarists were doing their best to help themselves, hut instead of encouraging them in this praiseworthy spirit, they were simply using these efforts as an avenue of escape from their obligations. It was decided unanimously to object to the proposal of the National Association to bleed the branches, and to urfe it instead to press for a greatlvincreased sub-id v. The meeting also decided to urge the Government to fix higher salaries for apiary instructors.
