AN INTERESTING CLRCULAR. A member of the Auckland City Council who is also a candidate for re-election, has received the following circular from tho secretary of the Auckland Picture Proprietors' Association. "As a candidate for the City Council at the forthcoming election, we should be obliged if you will consider the following questions" and kindly let mc have a re-

ply by return mail. 1. —Are you favourable to allowing ■ the Auckland Picture Houses the same opportunity for opening on' Good Friday and Xmas day as the Council accords to its own entertainment enterprises, the Auckland Zoo and the Domain, which it grants to travelling bands, always provided that the picture bouses screen programmes are suitable for the day, and approved by the Town Clerk, as in the past, employment of staff to be optional?''

2.—"Are you in favour of insisting that the Council's public halls of entertainment shall be subject to the same by-laws, which the Council insist all theatres, .and entertainments hall shall rigidly observe?" .

"It is the intention of my association to assist the candidates and those who are favourable to fairplav ~to the picture houses, by having them, placed on a 'ticket.' and advertised on the screens of all Auckland picture theatres. No advertisements for other can-' didates will be allowed on the screens of the picture houses. It may be of interest to you that announcements ou the screens of, the: picture houses are viewed by over 60,000 people weekly." ? , The candidate who received this circular has drafted the following reply:! (1). "No! for the following reasons, I am not allowed to open my warehouse on those days. Every trader, every worker, must stop bis. ordinary business on those days, and the employers must pay the men for those holidays. VVhy should picture houses be allowed to carry on their businesses just the same as j other days ? Since the laws say those days are to be observed as Sundays, and | I value Sunday, I will always do all I can to preserve it as a day of rest. The* Council does allow bands to play in the park on..Sunday- afternoons and take up a collection occasionally for some charitable purpose. The Zoo is the property of- the citizens, and: any money taken at the gates is' the property of the citizens-and does'not go. to enrich private enterprise." .■ ■■ '-. -. -' (2). 'T am strongly in favour of the Council strictly observing its own bylaws."

."I note, the threats in the closing sentence but these have no terrors for mc."
