FLOOD PREVENTION.
m • SCHEME FOR MANAWATU. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTOX X., this day. The Manawatu-Oroua River Board received a report from its engineer of a modified scheme of flood control as the forerunner of a more elaborate and comprehensive scheme originally decided upon. The modified scheme is based on the lines of the larger proposal and is calculated to act as an efficient prevention against floods pending the time when the larger undertaking can be 1 completed. The salient feature of the I modified scheme is that it largely proI vides for improvement of the Tiver channel and the construction of spillways. The opinion of the engineer is that the scheme, if adopted, would give protection for j'ears to come and allow consummation of the major project to be arrived at gradually. The cost of the scheme is estimated at £174,000. A small boy riding on a scooter behind a motor lorry in Hobson Street, Just after noon to-day, met with an accident owing to a collision with a motor car that came from the opposite direction. The lad's left leg was fractured and other serious injuries resulted. At the time of going to press his identity had not been established. 1 l
