FRAM AT SPITZBERGEN.
ADVENTURE OF AMUNDSEN. SHIP HOBBY OUTDISTANCED. LONDON. April 14. News of the Amundsen North Pole expedition has been received by wireless from King's Bay, SpitsbergenThe message states that the Norwegian transport Fram reached the edge of the ice at that northerly point of Spitsbergen at 2 a.m. on Monday. The Fram made a satisfactory crossing of the Greenland Sea from Tromso, Norway, notwithstanding that she encountered fog and snow on Sunday morning and also scattered driftice, which compelled the Fram to proceed slowly. The fog made it difficult to determine the vessel's position, but it suddenly lifted on Sunday night, and the captain caught a glimpse of the northern point of Prince Karl Foreland. The Frani is now proceeding at full speed up the Fjord. The message said that during the voyage the Fram lost connection with the steamer Hobby, which is carrying the two flying boats to be used in the final dash to the Pole. She was outpaced by the transport, but was expected at King's Bay iv 24 hours. The weather forecasts had held good, and the meteorological service on the Fram was functioning satisfactorily. It would he still better when American reports were received after Wednesday. Finally, the message said the. members of the expedition were in excellent spirits. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
