IS COST TOO HIGH?

COUNTY ADMINISTRATION.

AN INTERESTING SUGGESTION.

The question of the cost of county administration was raised by Mr. A. N. Field at the Wellington Automobile Club, and on his motion it \va9 resolved: "That in view of the large sum annually lost in consequence of tlie high cost of county council administration, the Government be urged to set up an inquiry into this important matter." At present, said Mr. Field,; the cost of county council administration is equal to 9.25 per cent of the total expenditure, while the borough, councils spend only 3.60 per cent of the expenditure on administration, and the Public Works only n.G7 per cent. If the cost of county administration could be reduced by 4 per cent to 5.25 per cent, it would mean an annual saving , of £117,312, which would be sufficient to pay interest and sinking fund on between 600 and 700 miles of bitumen surfacing of similar type to that recently approved by the Highways Board.
