SOLDIER SETTLERS.
UNABLE TO TAY RATES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, Monday. At to-day's meeting of the Waipa County Council tlio hardships under which returned soldier settlers iv this district arc confronted with to make ends meet, was shown by a statement I presented by the county solicitors concerning judgment summonses against returned soldiers. The solicitors stated that, in each case the defendants had produced to the court the dairy company's official returns showing the amounts paid to the defendants. They also produced a proper statement of receipts and expenditure, supported by vouchers in most cases, and these were checked in court. The council can rest assured, concluded the report, that there had been no fraud by these men; they were quite unable to pay the judg- ■ meiits. out of receipts from their farms.
