RAILWAY FATALITY.
TRUCKS OFF THE LINE. COLLISION WITH A CAB. A GUARD KILLED. FOUR WORKEKS INJURED. {By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ELTHAM, This day.. Last evening a railway fatality occurred at a shallow cutting on the new Opunake railway line (opened last week), when Frank Forman, aged 50, a guard on a workers' train, was killed and four workers were injured. The train was returning with workers to its base at Kapuni when a cow jumped on to the line without warning. The guard foreman as usual, was standing up in an open truck with the workmen, the latter being seated. He gave the warning single but the cow was only a few feet off and the train could not be pulled up. The first six trucks were derailed, and Mr. Forman was. thrown under one of the trucks. He was pinned under the wheels and when dug out succumbed to severe injuries. The other workmen were thrown out, but their injuries were not severe. The names of the injured were: W. H. Green, injuries to head; A. Martyn, injuries to head and limb; C. Long, injury to ankle; P. Sexton, fingers injured.
