INSURING NEW WARSHIPS.
An interesting sidelight upon the production of warships for the Royal Xavy was contained in the "Times" financial columns a few days ago, says the "Army, and Xavy Gazette," where it was announced that insurances amounting to a million sterling had been placed in the London market in respect of one of the British cruisers to be built in private yards. These insurances are the first of the kind that have been effected in the market for some time. Presumably, says the writer, the armament will also be insured while under construction, and this should involve insurances amounting to more than £500.000. Incidentally. ,the fact that shipbuilders insure their new warships until the latter are handed over to the Admiralty indicates how wide is the area of business and employment created "by such a contract. It is by no means only the town where the ship is built which benefits, nor the trades or professions directly concerned in shipbuilding and armament production.
