REMAND ON BAIL. (Received 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Cuthbert J. dc Garis appeared before a justice of the peace in city watchhouse charged with obtaining £300 by means of a valueless cheque. Bail was fixed at £3000. Talking with friends after his release, he said that while he should have been allowed to return to Australia by himself, his escort was a gentleman. "Why," he added, "I even sold him two blocks of land on the way across." —(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
