Then he was 6ent to Fort Chalmers as clerk in charge, and a year later became booking clerk at Oamaru. In 1896 he was appointed stationmaster at Maurieeville, and thereafter held the same position at Mangaonoho Ohingaiti, Aramoho, Petone. and l.atnb ton (Wellington), and returned tc Dunedin as stationmaster in HMD.
