BRITAIN AND FRANCE.
DEBTS OF ALLIES. LONDON, January 10. The correspondence which M. Clementolj (French .Minister of Finance) and Mr. | Winstone Churchill (British Chancellor of the Exchequer) exchanged in Paris has; been published. It shows that the former took the initiative by requesting Mr. Churchill to doline the British ideas as to inter-Allied debts as a subject on which France was desirous of reaching a settlement. Mr. Churchill, in replying, promised to probe the matter in the British Cabinet and to send an answer to enable France to present definite proposals. In the! meanwhile he repeated that the Balfour Note remains the dominating guide and ! principle. At the conclusion of yesterday's meeting of the Cabinet, which dealt specifically with this subject, it was reported that further discussion of details was necessary before a Xote could be sent to France. A definite pronouncement iunlikely to be made for several weeks. The Balfour Note broadly laid down the principle that. Britain did not require more from the Allies together than was necessary to liquidate the British debt to America.— (Renter.)
