Levdet the Prefect of the Eure-et-Loir Department, has arranged with farmers to supply produce direct to consumers. Loads of vegetables are conveyed to an open space at Chartres, where the Prefect's wife, assisted by the chief of the police, and prominent women of the town, sell the produce to the inhabitants. They disposed of the first lot. consisting of a ton of cabbages, a ton of carrots, and two tons of potatoes, in a very short time. The prices were only a third of those charged by the "ring."
