WEATHER BOUND.
CROWDS AT TE KUITI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, Monday. The holidays were marred by a heavy downpour of rain commencing Christmas night and culminating on Saturday in a record flood. Residences on the lower portions of the town were completely surrounded for some hours owing to the drains and pipes being unable to carry the sudden deluge from the surrounding hills. Beyond considerable inconvenience to residents little damage -was done to property.
Owing to the torrential rain many portions of the main road became impaseable to motorists, and the town was consequently full of visitors. The hotels were overcrowded, and several private people accommodated refugees.
Owing to the Waitomo Stream being in heavy flood visitors were unable to inspect the Waitomo Caves. The Government Hostel was also taxed with tourists, the overflow from which found their way to town. The flood hag now subsided, and tourists can again visit the Caves as usual.
