CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
TOURNAMENT AT NELSON. VAUGHAN LEADING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NELSON, Tuesday. The New Zealand chess championship tourney was continued to-day, when the third round was completed. Results of the concluding games were as follow:
Vaughan v. Pihl.—Vaughan secured a pood attack in a queen's gambit game. Later he won a pawn and left Pihl with an isolated queen's pawn. Pihl was forced to give up a bishop for two pawns, but blundered in continuation and lost a rook. He then resigned.
Cole v. E, E. Hicks. —Cole played a quecn"s pawn game and obtained the better development. In the middle of the game he won a piece and two pawns, whereupon Hicka resigned a hopeless game.
Sevcrne v. F. M. Dodds. —A Buy Lopez game, with a very even opening. Sevcrne won a pawn in the middle of the game and exchanging queens and rooks won an interesting pawn end game. The position at the end of the third round is as follows: —
