"COURAGE AND FORESIGHT."
MUNICIPAL BAND PRAISED
JMATTER OF ADMISSION CHARGES,
That the new municipal band is appreciated by at least one individual was manifested last night by a letter read at the "meeting; of the City Council from Mr. S. Adams.
"I am satisfied that the band performances of the future will be a credit to the city," wrote Mr. Adams, "thanks to the Mayor and councillors for their courage and foresight in bringing about the desired improvement." The Mayor (Sir James Gunson) took the opportunity to express dissatisfaction in one respect, however. Hβ said he could not agree with the action of the committee which had fixed a charge of 2/ for admission to the. concert given in the Town Hall. The Council should take the view that the band had been formed for the education and pleasure of tne public, and it should do nothing to deprive the great body of the citizens of opportunities for lit tending the performances. A series of concerts at popular prices should be determined on, at popular prices and with no reservations. It was hoped that the band would uplift the people's appreciation of good music, and they should make the people feel that the band belonged to them.
The Council decided that the charge for concerts by the band held in the Town Hall should be 1/ to all parts of the building, and 6d for children under 16 years of age. It was also decided to confine the holding of the performances to the Town Hall and Zoological Park, except by special resolution from time to time by the Council.
