WORKERS' EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION.

A VALUABLE GIFT. The director of tutorial classes, Mr. L. A. Mander, M.A., has received word from the secretary of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, U.S., that, in response to his request, its executive committee had approved the inclusion of the Workers' Educational Association in the list of depository libraries of the endowment. This means that the Auckland W.E.A. will receive the publications issued by tbe Division of Economics and History. The executive of the Carnegie Endowment has made the following requirements—that the publications will be fully listed and classified, be given appropriate shelf-room, to be freely accessible to all applicants, and loaned to responsible individuals. The first shipment of books is to be made shortly, and future publications will be sent as issued. At the annual meeting held in the Trades Hall, the congratulations of tbe council were extended to Messrs. J. Shearer and J. W. Watson, holders of the University W.E.A.. bursaries awarded by the University College Council to the most promising W.E.A., students at the end of each year. Messrs. Shearer and Watson have done remarkably well in the recent University College examinations, both securing passes in 8.A., Economics and History. Mr. Shearar's achievement in gaining two first classes beinc a particularly fine one. The annual report showed that 530 people had enrolled in tutori.tl .Jsissff, •266 in non-tutorial clai-ie-*., and 878 in short courses, embracing a very wide range of subjects. The financial position was shown to be most encouraging. The balance in hand amounted to £301 10/4As a result of the great growth of the work the council decided to approve the appointment of an extra full-time WE.A. tutor and organiser who, it is hoped, will take up his duties during March of next .year.
