Sir Auckland Geddee, in an outspoken address to the English-speaking Union, | said the Dominions spoke of Britain as "the Motherland," a term affectionate in intention. It gave the feeling of old age if not of eenility. America exercised an influence on the Dominions in a way that no British influence affected America. It often happened that when the Dominions looked towards Britain they found no sympathetic answer or understanding.
