WAIKATO HOSPITALS.
NURSES' NEW HOME. TO COST £60,000. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. An emphatic protest againßt delay by the Department of Health in returning plans of the proposed hospital at Te Kuiti was made by Mr. Blackman (Te Kuiti) at a meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board to-day. Mr. Blactman stated that the plans had once been approved, but were later asked for by the department for submission to a maternity expert, in order that minor alterations should be made. The department had now had the plans for eight weeks, and there was no sign of them being returned, although they had been written for several times. It was decided to wire to the Minister, urging the immediate return of the plans. The chairman (Mr. J. P. Bailey) said he thought an appropriate name "for the institution would be "Kathleen Mavourneen Hospital." Thirteen tenders for the first portion of the new nurses' home were' received. This home will provide sleeping and recreation accommodation for fifty nurses, and will be the nucleus of a complete home for 200 nurses, at a cost of approximately £60,000. There was a difference of nearly £8000 between the highest and lowest tenders, and that of Andrews Bros. (Hamilton), at £19,895, . was accepted. The Hospital Board has made arrangements to raise, during the nest seven years, £67,308 (if necessary) fby way of bank overdraft, at 61 per cent, the immediate portion arranged for being £24,000, to be spent during this year and next year for completion of the Huntly hospital, and the first portion of the new nurses' home. Collateral security will be given in debentures, covering £15,000.
