Towell wrote that the protective works to the Queen Street footpath could now he undertaken with conlideii'-''. This wall was estimated to cost £80H, but lie suggested making ibe amount fIOUO, to allow of the expenditure of £!i)0 on draining the slip and for other contingencies. The lower wall in King Street, to cost £13W, might be eliminated altogether. Though £300 might seem a largo allocation for the small near the wharf, it was desirable that this should he authorised, so as to be in a position to cope with any circumstances which might arise, while the full amount need not be borrowed if found to be not needed. The Mayor expressed surprise at Mr. Powell's suggestion to do without the lower wall proposed to be erected in King Street, and said the Council had never been able to Impress Mr. Powell with the importance of the drainage of King Street. Members , supported these views, and it was agreed to retain all three allocations in the loan proposals, which are to be explained at a public meeting of ratepayers in the Masonic Hall on Friday evening. ■Water.—The continued, purity of the water supply was revealed by the analysis made for the Lake Takapuna Board of Control. BIBKENHEAX). The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. E. C. Walton) presided, and Councillors C. E. Campbell, E. U. Skeates. Albert Hadfield. Lester Moller. F. A. t'Jilpin, Wm. Wortbingtou, Phil H. Hayward, and Thos. Farrell. were also present. Short Cut.—The Mayor outlined the proposal to form a zig-zag path for a pedestrian short-cut, with the entrance from ilinemo.'i Street, in the vicinity of the water trough, up the hill through the Council reserve, and leading Into Weymouth Sirpet. Negotiations for a strip of land 12ft wide at the Weymouth Street end were in progress. Subject to a favourable reply in respect to the land, the Council authorised the immediate prosecution of this within the amount allocated. Council Yard.—The area of the land leased from the Colonial Sugar Company for a borough yard was stated to he under luUf an acre, having n frontage of two chains to Mokoia Street, and a depth of two and a-balf chains. The Council decided that the ambulance depot should remain at the present site, alongside the Council office. Bathing Sheds.—The Island Bay Progressive League intimated that a ladies' bathing shed had been provided by the residents of that locality, and requested the Council to erect a men's bathing- shed. It was decided to accede to this request. - Drainage Scheme.—ln reporting adversely on an application for a septic tank, the medical officer of health urged that proper drainage plans be prepared br the Council, and a scheme submitted to a poll of the ratepayers. Heserve.^—The recommendations of the Little Shoal Bay Reserve Committee were adopted. These approved the re-erection on the reserve of the boy scouts' hall, which is to be moved from the Northcote Point. Necessary attention to the floodgate was authorised. New Buildings.—Eight building permits were granted, the value of the additions being £2143.
