LATE DR. T. W. LEYS.
I TRIBUTE FROM CITY COUNCIL. The Auckland City Council last night paid its tribute to the great services rendered the city by the late Dr. Leys. On the motion of the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, tho following resolution was carried: "That the Auckland City Council regrets the loss the city has sustained by the recent demise of Thomson Wilson Leys, LL.D., and records its appreciation of the very valuable gifts to the city made by him during his lifetime arid of the personal services rendered in the establishment and development of the Leys Institute. His devotion to tbe welfare of the city and his high sense of public duty afford worthy examples of citizenship." Mr. Baildon, in moving the motion, said that in the passing of Dr. Leys Auckland had lost one of its most respected men. Since his arrival he had been active in the city's interests particularly in relation to edurational matters. A great deal of his time aud money had been devoted to the Library and Art Gallery. The Council wasi closely associated with him in bis capacity as a member of the Library Committee and Leys Institute. His gifts to the institutions could not be assessed in money value alone. Mr. J. W. Hardley mentioned his association with Dr. Leys at the institute. Dr. Leys' work among the boyj of the district was emphasised, and Mr. Hardley added that Auckland had lost a noble citizen, but Ponsonby had lost one of its best friends. The resolution was carried in silence. '
